چکیده

Indeed, when the iron content of liver biopsies from HCV-infected patients was measured, there was only a real increase in hepatic iron in 10% of the cases, despite a rise in serum ferritin and transferrin saturation.8 It should be pointed out that cytolysis could have led to the increase in both serum ferritin and transferrin saturation. In conclusion, it is unlikely that the C282Y mutation of the HFE gene accounts for the iron alterations related to HCV infection. Nevertheless, the role of the H63D mutation in the iron abnormalities warrants further studies.

Relative contribution of iron genes, dysmetabolism and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the pathogenesis of altered iron regulation in HCV chronic hepatitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Hepatitis C virus (HCV) chronic hepatitis predisposes to iron overload, which negatively influences the prognosis of this infection. Since the underlying mechanisms of this iron overload are undefined, we analyzed the prevalence of altered iron parameters, and the relative contribution of viral, metabolic, and genetic factors in Italian patients. DESIGN AND METHODS W...

Liver iron, HFE gene mutations, and hepatocellular carcinoma occurrence in patients with cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS The influence of HFE gene mutations and liver iron overload on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence in patients with cirrhosis is subjected to controversial results. The aim of this work was to clarify this influence in a large cohort of prospectively followed-up cirrhotic patients classified according to the cause of their liver disease. METHODS Three hundred one conse...

Frequency of C282Y and H63D Mutations of HFE Gene and Their Correlation with Iron Status in Iranian Beta-Thalassemia Major Patients

Background: Co-inheritance of hemochromatosis (HFE) gene mutations may play an essential role in the pathogenesis of iron overload in beta-thalassemia major (BTM) patients. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of HFE C282Y and H63D mutations in BTM patients and their correlation with some demographic data and biochemical iron markers. Materials and Methods: The study populat...

Mild iron overload in patients carrying the HFE S65C gene mutation: a retrospective study in patients with suspected iron overload and healthy controls.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The role of the HFE S65C mutation in the development of hepatic iron overload is unknown. The aim of the present study was: (A) to determine the HFE S65C frequency in a Northern European population; and (B) to evaluate whether the presence of the HFE S65C mutation would result in a significant hepatic iron overload. PATIENTS AND METHODS Biochemical iron parameters and HFE ...
